Media and freedom of information

  • May 2025: new law adopted by the National Assembly concerning communication and the freedom of the press.
    • Article 140: allows an article author, editor-in-chief, and publication direction to be charged for a single violation.
    • Article 56: introduces Penal Code to punish press offenses.
    • Articles 158, 177, 178, and 179: provide for the withdrawal of media licenses following a single infraction.

There are no programs and policies protecting whistleblowers outside of the institutions listed above.

Law proposals:

As of 2025, no whistleblower legal protections have been proposed in the Central African Republic.

Case Studies

  • In 2024, journalist Ephrem Yalike-Bgonzo revealed his involvement in a Russian disinformation campaign in CAR. Facing threats, he fled to Europe with assistance from PPLAAF.
